Re-fliming Schedule

Re-filming Schedule

On Wednesday 17th December, Daisy and I are re-filming and filming extra shots.

The shots we will be filming:

  • Filming shots for different angles (side angle, front on, high angle, medium shot, long shot)
  • Playing different instruments (piano, flute, clarinet etc)
  • Dancing shots.
We have chosen to film these shots as they will make the music video more interesting. The props and clothing will be chosen carefully to make the music video as visually interesting as possible for the audience.

Booking Equipment

Booking Equipment

Daisy and I have booked out the camera and tripod twice as we had to re-film certain bits and film more shots in order to get the desired look for our music videos. For the first bit of our filming we used a weekend where the weather was going to be nice and sunny. This is so all the shots looked bright and happy instead of looking gloomy. The second day of filming we chose a day that we were both free, as the filming was all going to be inside of instruments etc, we did not need the weather to be nice.

Star Image

Star Image

I have chosen these images for my star image photos as they relate to my music video ideas. My singer and performer will wear hipster clothing as it is most suitable for the song genre. They will be dressed in a oversized denim jacket along with disco pants, a crop top, a  navy jumper and navy trainers. All the pieces of clothing will have a colour scheme. All the colours in the music video will be neutral and some blacks. In many of the shots a panda mask will be used to hide the identity of the performer. This will create a mystery to the music video. The singing shots of the performer will be over the shoulder shots, close ups of the mouth and the side of the face to still keep the identity hidden throughout the video, however at the end it will all be revealed who is singing.

Editing

Editing

When editing I used Final Cut Express. Firstly I imported the videos that I filmed onto IMovie, then from there I imported them onto Final Cut Express. Then I began to drag my clips onto final cut express to edit them together. I then put on the singing shots and the music track and I lip synced them together. I did this by finding two points in both clips with the same sound, I put a marker in both of the spots and then I matched them together. This was fairly hard but in the end I managed to perfectly lip sync my shots.  For the first shot I wanted to speed it up as it was too long and I wanted the clouds to be moving fast. I did this by clicking on the chosen clip, going to modify, then speed and finally typing in my chosen speed. I did this in several other clips too, where I wanted the speed to be faster or slower than the original. In the picture below you can see that there is an option where you can reverse your clip. I also did this in order to get the effect I wanted in a few clips, for example the character walking forward, reverse the clip they walk back and then the first clip again. When editing I made sure I was editing to the beat, the shots had to be within a second long, however some shots I made them 2 seconds but it still stuck to the beat of the song as the beat is not consistent throughout the whole song.

Filming and Re-filming

Filming and Re-filming

I filmed my music video from the 17th - 19th October 2014. On the 17th Daisy and I filmed the sunset that we were going to use at the beginning of the video. The following day we went up to central London to film the rest of the music video. We filmed in the iconic places around London e.g. Trafalgar Square, Thames, buses, telephone box, London eye, Tower of London, Hyde park, the London underground. We did not use all the places we were going to film in as the weather changed. We did not film in Soho, Tate Modern and St Paul's Cathedral. We used these places as they are visually interesting. When we were getting to the end of filming it started to rain, therefore we had to leave which caused us to lose footage that we could of filmed. Because of this we had to re-film to get extra footage as we did not have enough. We re-filmed on the 12th of November 2014. The central London shots were filmed by Daisy Hill and I filmed all the shots of the woods and we took turns filming in the dancing shots and the shots in the playground.

Storyboard

Storyboard

I made a storyboard of the shots that I was going to use in my final piece. I did this to get an understanding of what it would look like and how many shots I would need to take in order to fit the speed of my song. The song required me to take over 180 shots. On my storyboard I drew a variety of different shots e.g. from different angles, long shots, medium shots, close ups.

Risk Assessments

Risk Assessments

There are many risks i may come across when filming:

Weather: When filming I had to chose a day where it was not raining and it was fairly sunny so the footage was nice. If the weather is wet there is a risk that the actor may fall and injure themselves and also the camera may get wet which means that it could break.

Locations: The locations that Daisy and I are filming in are very busy. This makes it harder for us to move around London. As there are many people it will be hard to keep them out of our shots when we are filming. Public transport is busy in all hours of the day which means that we may lose each other which is another risk therefore we have to stick to each-other.

Getting permission

Getting permission

In the summer of 2014, I had to find a song that was not copyrighted, so I could use it to make a music video. One of my friends is a DJ and he makes songs, I asked him for permission to use his song 'Embrace this day'. I had to download the song from sound cloud as it is where his music is kept. His song genre is house, so I analysed music videos with a similar genre.

Casting

Casting

When choosing who to have in our music video, we had to consider these things:
  • Someone who can dance
  • Confident
  • Not camera shy
  • Knows the song well
We chose to have our singer and the actor to be a young girl, as the younger people have more energy and they would be able to dance etc. The track is house which will attract a lot of younger people, and as the singer n actor will be young, they will be able to connect with what they are doing. But also by having a young girl it will attract a wide range of audiences. The person being these two roles will also have to live in London as that is where we are filming, having someone out of London would be difficult as it would be hard for them to get to different places.

For our panda actor and female singer we have chosen Rikki Caiger, this is because she is a good dance, very confident. As she's confident, she is not camera shy which is good as she will be in nearly every shot of the music video. Rikki knows the song very well so she knows the lyrics to it and is able to do lip syncing for the singing bits.

Locations

Locations

For mine and Daisy's media production, we want to show off our city. The locations I chose to film in were based in the centre of London, I chose this area as the locations are visually pleasing and are interesting as they are always busy. The locations I chose were very iconic and they are known are tourist attractions.

These are the places/objects that we will be filming in:
  • Camden Town
  • Trafalgar Square
  • London Bridge
  • South Bank
  • Telephone Box
  • Hyde Park
  • London Bus
  • St Pauls Cathedral
  • The London Eye
  • The London Tubes
  • Tate Modern
  • Black Cabs
  • Buckingham Palace, the soldiers and horses.
  • Soho
  • Leicester Square

Lyric Moodboard

Lyrics Moodboard

These images represent the lyrics in my chosen song. I have used iconic places in London as I think they interesting locations to film in. The panda image is there as the name of my artist is 'panda man'. The images can represent a nice 'beautiful' day as said in the lyrics of the song.

Andrew Goodwin's Theory

Andrew Goodwin's Theory

Identifies key features that distinguish music as a form:

  • A relationship between visuals either illustrating, amplifying or contradicting the lyrics.
  • A relationship between the music and the visuals again either illustrating, amplifying or contradicting the music.
  • Music genres have their own music video style and iconography.
  • There is likely to be voyeurism, particularly in the treatment of women.
  • There's a demand on the part of the record company for lots of close ups of the main artist.
  • There is likely to be intertextual references either to other music videos, films or TV texts.
Thought Beats - seeing the sound in your head.
  • Firstly - look at the music itself. Take into account the structure of the song - chorus and verses.
  • Secondly - the voice of the song. the artists voice is extremely unique, can form identification or trademarks that work well with the stars image. Barthes theory of the grain of voice can be related to this. sees the singing voice as an expressive instrument and therefore able to make associations of its own.
  • Thirdly - Points of the artists mode of address. Songs can be seen as stories and the artist the storyteller, making the music video a two communication device, them telling us a story and us listening.
When watching a music video we only get a gist of the meaning of the song and then tend to make up  our own idea of what is being told. Goodwin explains that music videos should ignore common narrative. Its important that they advertise their artist. The artist as both the narrator and participant helps to increase the authenticity. The lip sync and other mimed actions remain the heart of the music video. The audience must believe that it is real.

Relations of Visuals to Song:
  • Illustrate - Music videos can use a set of images to illustrate the meaning of lyrics and genre, this is the most common.
  • Amplify - This is similar to repeatability. Meanings and effects are manipulated and constantly shown through the video and drummed into vision.
  • Disjuncture - This is where the meaning of the song is completely ignored.
Technical Aspects
  • Technical aspects hold the music video together through the used of camera work, movement, angle, mise en scene, editing, sound and special effects.
  • Speed, camera movement, editing, cutting and post production are all forms of use of camera.
  • Lighting and colour help set the moods and emphasise key moments of the song for dramatic effect.
  • Beats - music videos use cut to go with the beat of rhythm making the video more entertaining.
  • Mise en scene - The setting of the music videos is vital, it needs to look authentic to attain professionalism.

Embrace This Day Lyrics

Embrace this day lyrics

All the length is running through my mind, daylight slipping away-ay-ay, we are ready to release the town, embrace this beautiful day yeah,

embrace this beautiful day yeah,

embrace this beautiful day,

embrace this beautiful day, day , day, day,

All the length is running through my mind, daylight slipping away - yeah, we are ready to release the t-t-town, embrace this beautiful day yeah,

I never thought I could feel like this, mm im with I'm so positive, super star-ar ease the pain, super star ease the pain,

embrace this beautiful day

embrace this beautiful day yeah

I never thought I could feel like this, mm im with I'm so positive,

embrace this beautiful day yeah
embrace this beautiful day yeah
embrace this beautiful day yeah
embrace this beautiful day

All the length is running through my mind, daylight slipping away - yeah, we are ready to release the town, embrace this beautiful day,

embrace this beautiful day yeah yeah yeah

Music Video Timeline

Music Video Timeline

Nickleodeon - Was the first type of indoor exhibition space dedicated to showing projected motion films. These small theatres charged five cents to get in, this idea flourished from 1905 to 1915.

Soundies - Soundies were three minute long musical films, they were produced in New York, Chicago and also Hollywood from 1940 and 1946. These also included short dance sequences which then appeared in later music videos.

Scopitone - This was like a juke box but instead it showed short music videos. Based on soundies, the technology developed after world war 2 and shorts film were put together with music and played through a specifically designed jukebox.

Musicals - A music is a film where songs are sung by the characters and interwoven into the narrative, sometimes dancing is also added. Musicals were a development in sound film techonology.

Top of the Pops - It was British music chart made by the BBC and it was shown on television. The programme consisted of preformances from the weeks best selling popular music artists.

Concert movie/film - is a type of documentary film, the subject of which is an extended live preformance or concert by a musician/artist or more recently a comedian.

MTV - MTV is now a 24 hour entertainment channel whereas when it started off it was only a music channel. Over recent years there has been far less music being played and more reality TV shows being played for example: Geordie Shore and Keeping up with the Kardashians. Video Killed a radio star was the first music video to be shown on MTV, the tv channel was launched on the 1st of July 1997.

Youtube - Youtube is a video sharing website. This site allows people to watch clips, upload clips and share clips. Available content includes: music videos, video clips, TV clips, and other content such as video blogging, short original videos and educational videos. Just about any video you want can be uploaded or found on youtube. More and more celebrities are using youtube to upload their latest music videos and to get as many views on them as possible.
