Music Video Timeline

Nickleodeon - Was the first type of indoor exhibition space dedicated to showing projected motion films. These small theatres charged five cents to get in, this idea flourished from 1905 to 1915.

Soundies - Soundies were three minute long musical films, they were produced in New York, Chicago and also Hollywood from 1940 and 1946. These also included short dance sequences which then appeared in later music videos.

Scopitone - This was like a juke box but instead it showed short music videos. Based on soundies, the technology developed after world war 2 and shorts film were put together with music and played through a specifically designed jukebox.

Musicals - A music is a film where songs are sung by the characters and interwoven into the narrative, sometimes dancing is also added. Musicals were a development in sound film techonology.

Top of the Pops - It was British music chart made by the BBC and it was shown on television. The programme consisted of preformances from the weeks best selling popular music artists.

Concert movie/film - is a type of documentary film, the subject of which is an extended live preformance or concert by a musician/artist or more recently a comedian.


MTV - MTV is now a 24 hour entertainment channel whereas when it started off it was only a music channel. Over recent years there has been far less music being played and more reality TV shows being played for example: Geordie Shore and Keeping up with the Kardashians. Video Killed a radio star was the first music video to be shown on MTV, the tv channel was launched on the 1st of July 1997.


Youtube - Youtube is a video sharing website. This site allows people to watch clips, upload clips and share clips. Available content includes: music videos, video clips, TV clips, and other content such as video blogging, short original videos and educational videos. Just about any video you want can be uploaded or found on youtube. More and more celebrities are using youtube to upload their latest music videos and to get as many views on them as possible.
