What is a horror film?

"Horror is a film genre seeking to elicit a negative emotional reaction from viewers by playing on the audience's primal fears. Horror films often feature scenes that startle the viewer; the macabre and the supernatural are frequent themes. Thus they may overlap with the fantasy, supernatural, and thriller genres.
Horror films often deal with the viewer's nightmares, hidden fears, revulsions and terror of the unknown. Plots within the horror genre often involve the intrusion of an evil force, event, or personage, commonly of supernatural origin, into the everyday world. Prevalent elements include ghosts, aliens, vampires, werewolves, demons, gore, torture, vicious animals, evil witches, monsters, zombies, cannibals, and serial killers. Conversely, movies about the supernatural are not necessarily always horrific."        - www.imbd.com

Choosing my music

Music

To find the suitable music for my film opening I used : audio network.lgfl.org.uk
I used this website to find music for my film opening as these pieces of music are not copyrighted. I spent a while looking for the right music pieces, there was a wide range of music to choose from and many genres and moods. This was very helpful as I could use the mood option to find a suitable piece of music for the section of my film that I wanted to use it in.

Music that I thought was suitable

  • Exorcist
  • Frozen Teardrop
  • Way of life
  • Palpitation
  • New age
The two final pieces that I chose were 'Frozen Teardrop' and 'Way of Life'. I used 'Way of Life' for the first section of my film opening as it was a calm, cheerful piece of music and it sets the mood, as the film opening is very calm at the beginning, as there is just a boy walking. The second piece of music was also a good choice as it created tension and it makes the audience want to know what is happening and who 'The Laurels' are.

Refilming

Refilming

I had to re-film my whole film opening as the lighting in the first filming was too dark and there were certain details that were very hard to see. There were also several shots that I filmed in the first filming that were very wobbly and there were many shots that did not fit together as there was a big jump cut in between each shot. When I was re filming I made sure that filmed a bit earlier than I did before as I wanted it to be lighter. However I still wanted it to be a little bit darker than it would of been in mid day, so I decided to film when the sun was setting. This was a good setting for my film opening as it was getting darker but it was not too dark that you could not make out anything.
